For the 19th year in a row, Whatcom Peace & Justice Center is hosting Bellingham’s International Day of Peace celebration. International Day of Peace is WPJC's main fundraising and educational event of the year, raising critical funds to support the ever more critical work of the Center in advocating for peace and against wars & militarized systemic violence at home and abroad. This year, our goal is to raise $5,000. Funds make it possible for us to keep our doors open for new and old peace activists while supporting our volunteers and staff in their service. Please give as generously as you are able. Donations are tax-deductible. Donate here to support the Center and secure a spot to see Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz live at the Pickford:This year features a series of hybrid events including the presentation of our annual Lifetime Peacemaker Award, a new Youth Peacemaker Award, and a historical conversation with Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz honoring 20 years of resistance to endless wars, systemic violence, and the need for an international, intergenerational and intersectional peace movement.

Every year since 2005, we honor a local peacemaker elder whose life's work is in the spirit of Rosemary and Howard Harris, the co-founders of Bellingham's peace vigil. |
In line with our intergenerational work, this year we are also offering the very first Dotty Dale Youth Award with funds offered by the Dale family and community. |
Sadie Olsen and Tina McKim are our Peacemaker Awardees for 2022
Tina McKim is a founding steering committee member of Birchwood Food Desert Fighters as well as the Bellingham Deaf and Disability Justice Coalition. Her work centers the most impacted and insists that solutions come from the ground up. She is an artist, writer and organizer whose family makes their home in the unceded territory of the Lummi and Nooksack peoples, striving to be good guests. A passionate advocate for disability justice, she works for a transformative and equitable future where our actions as a community are rooted in our interdependence with one another, collective access and collective liberation. She is inspired deeply by Community to Community Development’s idea of the beautiful meal, where everything on the plate was grown with care, in conditions that respect both the workers and the planet, the food is being eaten by people who have easy, dignified access to culturally appropriate foods, and all people are able to eat in peace without fear of violence or deportation.

Kwastlmut is an advocate for Indigenous rights and an active participant in community healing. She’s the co-founder of the Whiteswan Environmental (WE) a Native-led non-profit organization, and has been instrumental in the start up of Whatcom Intergenerational High School (WIHS), an innovative new charter school that will open its doors in fall 2021. As an Indigenous student, Kwastlmut advocates for Indigenous cultural ways to be included in curriculum, policies, and practices. She is a member of the Northwest Portland Area Youth Indian Health Board, and she also co-facilitates diverse groups of students and adults for Western Washington University's Community Engagement Fellows. Kwastlmut brings the Community Fellows process for understanding and solving community problems into organizational settings both locally and globally. Kwastlmut has traveled to conferences as a youth advocate and voice for Indigenous peoples. She currently attends Northwest Indian College in Bellingham, WA.

Emcee, Shu-Ling Zhao
Shu-Ling Zhao (she/her) is biracial Chinese-American, mother, daughter, sister, wife, auntie, performer, director, fabricator, community organizer, arts educator, lover of local wildlife, cooking enthusiast, fundraiser, facilitator, fair-weather runner, black coffee drinker, data devotee, seltzer connoisseur, amateur plant parent, millennial, and artist residing on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Lummi, Nooksack, and Coast Salish people.
In 2020, after the murder of George Floyd, Shu began working with community organizers to support the Black Lives Matter movement locally. In August of 2020, she helped organize the protest to declare racism a public health crisis and later worked with both Whatcom County and City of Bellingham on their Resolutions Affirming Racism as a Public Health Crisis. Following the murder of six Asian and Islander women in Atlanta last April and with the rise of hate incidences against the AAPI community, Shu organized a solidarity vigil at Maritime Heritage. She is currently working with Chuckanut Health Foundation and local partners in government to develop a Whatcom County Racial Equity Commission through a community-owned process.
