Dear Congressman Larsen,
We are extremely disturbed by your vote in favor of H. Res. 867. This resolution was written expediently in response to “The United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict” authored by Justice Richard J. Goldstone. The refusal of the U.S. Congress to even consider Justice Goldstone’s report is reprehensible and inexcusable. Justice Goldstone’s credentials are above repute having served on the following Human Rights Commissions:
· South African Standing Commission of Inquiry Regarding Public Violence and Intimidation
· The International War Crimes Tribunal on the former Yugoslavia
· The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda
· The International Panel of the Commission of Enquiry into the Activities of Nazism in Argentina
· The Independent International Commission on Kosovo
· The Volker Committee investigation into the UN's Iraq oil-for-food program in 2004/5
In his letter dated October 29, 2009, to Chairman Berman and Ranking Member
Ros-Lehtinen of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Justice Goldstone provided a clear and thoughtful response to the derisive and incorrect allegations embedded in the text of H. Res. 867. Did you read his letter prior to publicly dismissing it?
The Resolution’s title, “Calling on the President and the Secretary of State to oppose unequivocally any endorsement or further consideration of the ‘Report of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict’ in multilateral fora” forthrightly disregards international inquiries into Human Rights abuses setting a dangerous precedent of dismissal.
As an organization that seeks peaceful relationships between people and nations—relationships based on justice, dignity, and equality—the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center asserts that it is essential that all suspected Human Rights violations be investigated and that the resulting investigative reports be fully considered with grave seriousness.
In closing, the refusal of the U.S. Congress to consider this report is unbelievably arrogant. Who are you to dismiss a Human Rights report from such a man as Justice Goldstone? Moreover, this hubris is unwise, for there may be a time when our nation needs to call upon the expertise of Justice Goldstone to assist us in investigating and documenting illegal horrors and war crimes committed against us.
We demand that you never again refuse to consider a United Nations investigation of Human Rights violations.
Sincerely,
Dorothy Dale Marie Marchand
